Qualification Challenge Final Round
Designers' Office
Try to infer from observations and propose ways to verify.
Challenge Brief
Students will act as designers at the designer’s office responsible for researching foreign spaces. They are required to select a case study of an overseas space, observe "what makes it different," and consider "whether it is applicable to Taiwan." They must explain the reasons for suitability and infer the hypothetical process of adoption.
2024 | Domestic and International Post Offices
You are an intern designer. By studying post offices in the U.S., Germany, and Korea, you will gather and combine the characteristics of three post offices to imagine what a "post office of the future" might look like.
Through observing their "commonalities," you will dive deeper into the core aspects and design concepts of post offices. After examining the differences between these foreign post offices, you will evaluate whether similar designs can be applied in other countries, and ultimately determine what break through designs will be made in the future.
Welcome to join the STW Designer’s Office, where together, we will build the future post office and imagine how the world can change!

2023 | Domestic and International Student Cafeterias
You are a space designer observing student cafeterias in the U.S., the Netherlands, and Japan. Your goal is to gather insights and design a cafeteria that combines sustainability, health, and aesthetic, all while meeting the needs of students.
The cafeteria serves as more than just a dining space; it's where students’ daily behavior is influenced. How much food do they consume? Is it healthy? Is it an enjoyable experience?
Welcome to join the "International Design Project," where you will explore how cafeteria designs from various countries can be adapted to meet the needs of students.

The design studio received a commission: Our client is the owner of a supermarket in Taiwan, and they hope we can transform the vegetable section of their store.
By observing the vegetable sections of international supermarkets or by analyzing the differences brought by cultural or habitual differences in other countries, you are to evaluate which designs are worth learning from. You must also consider which designs are appropriate to adapt to Taiwanese supermarkets.
Welcome to join the Designer's Team to reflect on which vegetable section designs from overseas can be applied to Taiwan's supermarket environment. Let's create a vegetable section that better meets the needs of its users.

Rubrics
See|Detailed Observation
- The "observations" must be based on specific details that “can be pointed out in the image.”
- The observations must be highly relevant to the issue at hand and contribute to the development of solutions.
- A significant amount of valuable information is observed, including details that may not be immediately apparent to others.
Think|Logical Inference
- Clearly indicate how one's "interpretation" is derived from specific observations.
- Demonstrate a clear logical relationship between "new observations + existing knowledge" and the resulting "inference.”
Think|Critical Thinking and Verification
- Maintain a critical attitude towards one's own inferences, clearly identifying their shortcomings and recognizing areas that require further verification.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to verify the aspects of the inference that need verification.
Wonder|Well-Grounded Proposals
- Explicitly state the specific "observations" and "inferences" that led to a particular proposal. The underlying logical argument should be clear, understandable, and coherent.
- Be able to distill the essence of a phenomenon or accurately grasp the fundamental issues of a research problem based on observations. Consider how to achieve the same goal or function in a novel way.
- Proposals should consider multiple perspectives, including the interests of various stakeholders, the short-, medium-, and long-term impacts, potential side effects, and the balance between inputs and outputs.
